Present Music 2013-14 Season Announcement Milwaukee's new music ensemble, announces the 2013-14 season. This season continues Present Music's tradition of unique performances in creative places with a variety of exciting collaborations. This expanded season hosts seven concerts, and will introduce the Present Music audience to the newly formed Present Music Vocal Ensemble, Third Coast Percussion and Iarla Ó Lionáird, Ireland's greatest Sean nós singer. INUKSUIT September 7, 2013 at 4pm Lynden Sculpture Garden 2145 West Brown Deer Road Milwaukee, WI 53217 Present Music's first duet with Lynden Sculpture Garden starts with a bang. Ninety-Nine percussionists descend on Milwaukee to perform John Luther Adams' Inuksuit in the amazing garden landscape of sculptures. The audience will meander among an aural adventure of tomtoms, whirly tubes, sirens, megaphones, conch shells, cymbals, temple gongs, wind machines, and bells. Water St. Milwaukee, WI 53202 Third Coast Percussion from Chicago joins Present Music for a program featuring Daniel Variations by Steve Reich. Reich intended this piece, inspired by the horrific decapitation of journalist Daniel Pearl at the hands of terrorists, to stand as a "shimmering piece of music, an enduring work" that will reflect its inspiration in Pearl's work to connect people in dangerous corners of the world. Pieces to be performed: Daniel Variations by Steve Reich Performers: Present Music and Third Coast Percussion THANKSGIVING November 24, 2013 at 5pm Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist 812 N. Jackson Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202 The newly-formed Present Music Vocal Ensemble will be joined by local choirs and singers to perform the amazing 40-voice masterpiece Spem in alium by Thomas Tallis alongside David Lang's Tallis-inspired 40-voice I Never. Present Music will perform Sarabande and Fly Away by Caroline Shaw, who, at 30, was the youngest person to ever win the Pulitzer Prize. Shaw will come to Milwaukee to work with the Present Music Vocal Ensemble for the performance. Keeping with the Present Music Thanksgiving tradition of friendship and inclusion, join in the opening and closing songs by the Bucks Native American Drumming and Singing Group and sing along to The Way Old Friends Do composed by Bjorn Kristian Ulvaeus of ABBA. So little time...Present Music's recent 'In the Chamber' concerts were performed in interesting and intimate spaces and were such a hit that we're doing it again. We'll feature music by several of today's most exciting women composers. Who will it be? Water St. Milwaukee, WI 53204 Danceworks joins Present Music for "new" new music inspired by "old" new music with an evening-length premiere featuring the music of Igor Stravinsky's timeless Soldier's Tale interspersed with new music by the hipster composers of Sleeping Giant composers' collective and brand new choreography by the brilliant Dani Kuepper. Pieces to be performed: Music from Histories. by Sleeping Giant Performers: Present Music, Danceworks Performance Company LIFE, LOVE, AND DEATH April 11, 2014 at 7:30pm Turner Hall Ballroom 1034 N 4th St. Milwaukee, WI 53203 Larla Ó Lionáird, Ireland's great Sean nós singer, comes to Milwaukee to perform Irish Composer Donnacha Dennehy's Grá Agus Bás (love and death). Present Music will perform Life by Louis Andriessen accompanied by a film by Marijke van Warmerdam. This performance will showcase life, love, and death-inspired art installations and dance with an after party featuring Milwaukee's Vitrolum Republic. Home Place will feature music from Shelter by David Lang, Julia Wolfe, and Michael Gordon with video by Bill Morrison, Passacaglia by Caroline Shaw, and Language from Invisible Cities by Christopher Cerrone with performances by Present Music's Creation Project students.
